Public Library-Roanoke County
Description: 49, 000 to 54, 000 sq ft. modern library
Cost Estimate: $9.1 million
Funding: $1.7 million from County funds, Lease revenue bonds
Announced: Improving or replacing the existing building on Electric Road was first proposed under the county’s capital improvements projects back in the early 1990’s. The size and scope were redefined about five years ago when it became apparent that the facility couldn’t be expanded enough on this small site to meet current needs, not to mention leaving room for future growth.
Timeframe: Rezoning permit completed in July, planning currently underway. The Board of Supervisors voted on December 4, 2007 to ask the Roanoke County Economic Development Authority to issues revenue bonds to fund this project. Construction was scheduled to begin in September 2008 but plans had to be reconfigured because the County did not receive any bids within their budget. A redesigned library plan was unveiled in May 2009 with less floor space. Grounbreaking on the new library was on October 27, 2009 and construction is scheduled for completion by March 2011.
