Stepped Plaza
Description: A staircase linking the pedestrian bridge from the Hotel Roanoke to Salem Avenue to create a more desirable public space at this important downtown location.
Cost Estimate: City budgeted $70, 000 to design and assess cost. A $70, 000.00 contract was awarded to The Harvester Inc., dba Commonwealth Architects on 3/15/07. In their City Market study, Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. and SFCS, estimated construction cost for the Stepped Plaza to be $1,960, 596. Three Schemes (A, B, C) were presented to City Council on October 1, 2007:
Scheme A-$3.5 million
Scheme B-$2.3 million
Scheme C-$2.3 million
Announced: Study of City Market area began in mid-summer 2005. Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. and SFCS, used a series of comprehensive workshops with farmers, City Market building vendors, citizens, and the City of Roanoke.
Timeframe: During the December 3, 2007 meeting of the Roanoke City Council, members agreed to delay the project in lieu of more important projects.
